Trail Description
This is a trip to explore several trails located somewhat in between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Saturday, Jan. 12th, will be akin to the overland type of travel with less intense, longer, and very scenic trails. Sunday, Jan 13th, will consist of shorter, more aggressive trails. The most difficult trail of Sunday is also the first run for the day (Twin Rocks) and is a return trip, so those who wish to opt out of the 6/7 rated trail can simply wait and re-unite with the rest of the group at the trailhead. The selected trails should be possible (with the possible exception of the Twin Rocks Trail), but difficult, in a stock Rover (Freelanders may be excluded) equipped with good tires and a good driver and/or spotter. That said, however, I have not pre-run this trail. I can’t make any promises about trail conditions/likelihood of obtaining some “Sierra Pinstripes”/et al. The trail rating guidelines mean body damage should, ideally, not be an issue in a properly driven Rover – however, ultimately you will have to rely on your own judgment and skill on all trails. Those attending will be responsible for bringing their own food and water.

The campsite for Saturday night is around 1500 ft., but I believe our camp is located in a valley so it could get fairly cold. Please be prepared for the temps and please leave your dogs at home if you plan on leaving them to sleep outside. For those that do not want to “fight the Man”, an Adventure Pass is required by the local authorities. Lastly, please be prepared to listen to a very short Tread Lightly! Talk and to follow all treadightly!

Meeting location for
Saturday 01/13/08 at 10:00AM

From Los Angeles: Head North on I-5 to CA-166. Take CA-166 west to mile marker 52 (about 12.5 miles west of New Cuyama. GPS N35 02.07’ W119 52.56’). Turn Southwest onto Cottonwood Road (paved). Turn right onto Foothill Road and follow signs for Los Padres National Forest. Bear left at sign for Bates Canyon Road. Head down the now graded dirt road to the White Oaks Guard Station (now closed) where we
will meet up at 10:00 am and continue on at 10:30.

The trails are as follows:
Bates Canyon Trail (#38 in Backcountry Adventures – Southern California: 12 miles, 1 hour, 2 out of 10 in difficulty). Portions traveled to reach Guard Station. Bates Canyon terminates at Sierra Madre Road (#37: 30 miles, approximately 3 hours, 2 out of 10).

From Sierra Madre Road we will continue back across CA 166 to Big Rocks Trail (#39: 4.4 miles, 0.5 hour, 2 out of 10). Camp for Saturday evening will be at a facility just off of the trail.

Sunday 01/14/08
Sunday we will hit several shorter, but more challenging trails.
Twin Rocks Trail (#40: 5.6 miles, approximately 1.5 hours out and back, 6 out of 10 with a 7 rating for the last 0.7 mile). This trail provides a good place to turn around before the rating reaches its 7 rating. Or, if you prefer to forego this trail altogether, the trail ends where it begins providing us a good place to regroup. Branch Creek (#41: 7.3 miles, approx. 1.5 hours, 5 out of 10). Twin Rocks begins/ends very close to Branch Creek. In turn, we will exit the Branch Creek trail slightly early and turn onto Paradise Road. Paradise Road (#42: 3.4 miles + 1.1 mile spur, 1 hour, 3-4 out of 10). Paradise Road terminates back into Big Rocks Trail, which we will follow back out to CA 166 to end the day hopefully with some daylight left for the trip home.

Communication:
Both CB and FRS stations will be on Channel 4.0
