Day one we will run Coyote canyon south with it's fun water crossing and the infamous rock gardens. Camp that night at fish creak camp and enjoy a barbeque provided by Tactical Rovers.(beverages will be up to you), Second day will take us down Fish creak canyon to Sandstone canyon then returning to take El royo seco del diablo up the Devils dropoff and exiting to S6. I look forward to seeing everyone and hopefully some new faces as well. More details and some pics from last year coming soon. If you have some pics please post them in the thread I start for this trip. Meeting time/place
Wendy and I are going out friday, late morning to make sure we get the camp site at Fish creek campground. We'll most likely explore the canyon. Anyone wanting to go early with us is welcome to.

We will be meeting Satuday morning at the traffic circle in the middle of Borrego springs at 9:00 am.(Christmas circle) from there to the trail head of south Coyote canyon to air down.

Two ways out: I-10 to Indio take 86 south to S22 west to Borrego springs. Fallow the main road to the traffic circle.

From Temecula: Exit I-15 on hwy 79 S (south not north). follow hwy 79s for several miles. watch for co hwy S2. it will tee off of 79 to the left. Just a few miles to the left turn for co hwy S22 (Montezuma Valley rd) fallow it to B.Srings. at the bottom of the hill(it's a windy one) It's called S3 for awhile. Turn right on Palm canyon Dr. fallow it to the traffic circle(Christmas circle) and look for the rovers.

The Trails:
South Coyote canyon is easy to moderate A couple fun water crossings, One can get up to 18 inches deep. It's a blast. A couple rock gardens. Sandy conditions throughout.

We will camp at Fish creek camp again this year. There are vault toilets and fire rings. NO WATER. So bring plenty of water with you. Also bring food for meals. This year myself and my bussiness partner, Kep Wadiak, will be providing a barbeque dinner at the camp ground to introduce our new venture, Tactical Rovers. So come and camp with us and get some great barbeque. (beverages will NOT be provided).

Day two trail: Aroyo Seco Del Diablo, is a moderate trail and is not recomended for stock rovers. Depending on time and the size of the group we may make a side trip to Sand canyon. It's a beautiful sand stone canyon with narrow high walls and just enough room for a vehicle to pass through in spots. The devils drop off offers some moderate rock crawling oportunities as well as a very steep sandy climb out of diablo canyon. After ascending the devils drop off we will cross the ocatillo forest to follow a winding canyon scattered with mud caves. we will pass by the Hollywood and Vine sign and end the day at S2.

Feel free to stay for the Sandstone canyon off shoot on day two. it is an easy trail and verry beautifull. Then its an easy backtrack to the campground and exit to SR76 if you'r not equiped for the remaining difficult trail.

There is fuel available in Borrego springs.

Any questions post up in the forum thread.

It was a great trip last year and I look forward to doing it again.

See ya there.

Description
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California. Five-hundred miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas and miles of hiking trails provide visitors with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the wonders of the California Desert. The park is named after Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza and the Spanish name borrego, or bighorn sheep. The park features washes, wildflowers, palm groves, cacti and sweeping vistas. Visitors may also have the chance to see roadrunner, golden eagles, kit foxes, mule deer and bighorn sheep as well as iguanas, chuckwallas and the red diamond rattlesnake.

Colorado Expedition

Meet on Saturday, 6 Nov at 0830 at Chiriaco Summit(33 39'39"N 115 43'117"W). Gas up here as this is that last gas for the trip.

Cross back over Interstate 10 and travel 1.3 miles to SR2013. From here it is approximately 5 miles to our first site. The first site is an abandoned flourspar mine where we will dig for fluorite. We will spend a couple hours here before heading out on the picturesque Red Canyon Trail( 8miles). We will drop into Salt Creek Wash and connect with the historic Bradshaw Trail. We will follow the trail as it skirts the Nothern most edge of a live aerial gunnery range to our next site. At the next site you will be able to pickup chalcedony and petrified pine bark. From here we will follow the Bradshaw trail to Wiley Well Road and proceed either Wiley Well or Coon Hollow camp sites. The camp sites are primitive.

Sunday morning after we break camp we will drive to the Hauser Geode Bed. If there is enough time and interest we can go to the Opal Hill Mine and dig for precious opal. There may be a fee to dig there however.

My contact info is:
Office-760-202-0224 x2010

Things to bring:
Shoval
Rock Hammer
5 Gallon Bucket(maybe 2)
Gloves
Water
FRS radio
Camping gear

LAND ROVER NATIONAL RALLY

2010 Land Rover National Rally
Where: Moab

When: October 19th – 23rd, 2010

The Rally Schedule
Tuesday October 19th: 4:00- 8:00 PM Registration

Wednesday October 20th: 7:00-8:00 AM Registration, Trails, Training Class

Thursday October 21th: 7:00-8:00 AM Registration, Trails, Cocktail Party

Friday October 22nd: OPEN DAY – NO TRAILS
Friday October 22nd: Afternoon CAR SHOW, 4:00-8:00 P.M. There will be a little overlap with our previous trip.

This is mostly a sight-seeing trip, a geology education, and photo opportunity bonanza. No hard-core driving on this trip.A number of people really wanted to go on the last one, but couldn’t make it. Here's your chance! The weather should be fantastic in late November. Bring layers- it can get pretty cold in the evenings especially at higher elevations. My friend Allan Shareghi, a senior geologist with the Dept. of The Interior, will again narrate the geology we discover on our trip.

Stock trucks should have no problems. Please bring a full-size spare. Bring a teakettle for our Teakettle Junction stop and obligatory photo op. Lunch will be on the trail on Saturday and Sunday.Time frame: November 20-22, 2009, Friday through Sunday (the weekend before Thanksgiving).

If you can't make all three days, join us for the days you can. Here is the itinerary.Friday, 9 am.Meet at Pearsonville on Highway 395, north of Inyokern.Stop at Fossil Falls- Fossil Falls is a unique geological feature. Volcanic activity in the Coso Mountain range, along with meltwater from glaciers in the nearby Sierra Nevada, played a role in the creation of the falls.

The rugged and primitive features of Fossil Falls are the product of volcanic activity. As recent as 20,000 years ago, lava from the local volcanic eruptions poured into the Owens River channel. The erosional forces of the Owens River acted upon this volcanic rock, forming the polished and sculptured features that now can be seen at Fossil Falls.

Stop at Red Hill just north of Fossil Falls- The red cinder cone visible to the north is the result of the violent ejection of trapped gases and molten material into the air from vent in the earth's crust. Cooling quickly when exposed to the air, the molten material formed a porous rock known as scoria, which built up around the original vent forming a cone-shaped hill.

Possibly investigate pumice mines northeast of Coso Junction.Brunch/lunch at Olancha Ranch Café. Phone: 760-764-2363Head east over to Swansea Grade, outside of Keeler and make our way up the grade with Cerro Gordo as our desired destination. This will be the most challenging part of the entire weekend. There is a definite opportunity for some California pinstriping, or at least there was last time through there.

We’ll make a stop at the Salt Tram at the crest of the Inyo Mountains. The BLM has been busy refurbishing the structures here.Head over to Cerro Gordo, once probably the most productive silver mine in California. We’ll stop for some photos, maybe a short tour, and some home-brewed root beer the The American Hotel. It's strange to stand in Cerro Gordo and realize that there are about 29 miles of tunnels beneath the town, in 13 different levels!!(We can’t spend the night in the bunkhouse at Cerro Gordo- darn!- the owner has been ill.)>From Cerro Gordo, we’ll run through the Joshua tree forest at Lee Flat and daylight permitting, head over to Darwin, Darwin Falls, and the China Garden Spring, replete with goldfish, before our first night stop at Panamint Springs.Panamint Springs has accommodations, camping, showers, real bathrooms, a restaurant, gas, and a general store. Phone: 775-482-7680 Saturday 8 am.

If it was too dark for Darwin on Friday afternoon (the sun goes down very early in late November), we’ll hit Darwin first thing Saturday morning. After Darwin, we’ll head over to the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, then Aguereberry Point (our tentative lunch stop overlooking Death Valley) and the mining town Skidoo.>

From there, we’ll head over to Marble Canyon, west of Stovepipe Wells. Time (daylight) permitting, we may make a run up to Mosaic Canyon as well.Saturday’s night stop will be at Furnace Creek Ranch. Furnace Creek Ranch has accommodations, camping, a couple of restaurants with GREAT dinner and breakfast, gas, and a general store. Phone: 760-786-2345Sunday 8 am.Sunday morning, we’ll head northeast into Nevada to Rhyolite before making our way through Titus Canyon. Rhyolite has some great photogenic “ruins” and a Bottle House made from over 30,000 beer bottles.

Once through Titus Canyon (an incredible visual and geological treat), we’ll head north again to Scotty’s Castle, which will probably be our lunch stop. There’s no food (nor gas) at Scotty’s Castle- bring your own. If you gassed up at Furnace Creek Ranch you'll be fine. We’ll probably take one of the tours at the castle, then head over to Ubehebe Crater, a volcanic crate a half mile across and about 500 deep. >From there, it's down to Teakettle Junction (don't forget to bring a teakettle to hang here and take a photo), The Racetrack with its “racing”rocks, and then Lippencott Mine Road (the next most challenging section of this trip) before ending up in Saline Valley. It’ll probably be dark by now. South through Saline Valley, up through Grapevine Canyon back to Hwy 190. Air up the tires before heading back to Olancha for dinner.I may also invite a couple of friends who don't own Land Rovers- feel free to do the same.

WE ARE MOVING!!!

PRESS RELEASE
October 22, 2009
For Immediate Release
Contact: Anita Longhitnao

INLAND ROVERS INC
WE ARE MOVING!

Riverside, CA - October 22, 2009 - We would like to inform you that we are moving to a larger and improved facility to better serve you. While summer is one of the best times of year to camp, with its warm, sunny weather and long days, it can get very hot. Being outside for days and nights on end can get quite uncomfortable when the weather is too hot. Here are some tips on camping in hot, dry weather.

Step 1
Bring plenty of water. This seems obvious, but it can't be stressed enough. As a simple guide, pack 1/2 gallon for each person, per day, and more if you plan to do a lot of strenuous activity (hiking, climbing, biking). Extra water is better than not enough. Also pack a filter or water purification chemicals just in case your water supply runs low.

Step 2
Bring the right clothing. Avoid black clothing, and wear white and light colors that do not attract the sunlight. Also wear polyester blends and fabrics that wick moisture and dry quickly.

Step 3
Get a tent with plenty of ventilation. Tents with a full mesh body will keep you cooler and provide better ventilation.

Step 4
Bring a tarp, tent or shade to sit under. In addition to tents for sleeping, be sure to have some shade for eating and sitting at the campsite.

Step 5
Pitch your tent more strategically. Look for a place that is shaded from the morning sun (rising in the east) and try to pitch your tent in a way that will allow you to capture a breeze through your windows.

Step 6
Use block ice rather than cubes because it will take longer to melt. Be sure that your cooler is shaded and consider putting it in a cool, shallow pool of water in a stream when available to keep it cooler and allow your ice to last longer.

Step 7
Use separate coolers for food and drinks to keep cooling more efficient.

Step 8
Bring camping sheets/sleeping bag liners in addition to sleeping bags. These can be used alone or can line the sleeping bag, depending on the nightly weather.

Step 9
Avoid the heat of the midday (11 AM to 3 PM) when possible and do activities in the morning and evening when it's cooler.

Step 10
Avoid caffeine because it dehydrates you. Keep an eye on your urine, and if it begins to become golden or dark yellow/orange, be sure to drink plenty of water to rehydrate. You should also avoid alcohol, though a camping trip may make this difficult--just be sure to keep drinking water.

Step 11
Of course, don't forget to wear plenty of sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Keep the Pressure On! Keep Our State Parks Open

Just hours ago, the California State Senate vote on the proposed State Park Access Pass failed. With 22 in favor (all Democrats) 14 opposed (all Republicans + 1 Democrat) and 4 abstentions, it did not receive the 2/3 vote required. Although this is a big disappointment, it does not change our course of action – we all need to continue fighting to urge the Legislature to keep state parks open, even if that requires a funding source that isn’t the State Park Access Pass.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Do Not Buy Your Puppy From a Pet Store
That puppy who charmed you through the pet shop window has most likely come from a large-scale, substandard commercial breeding facility, commonly known as a puppy mill. In these facilities, parent dogs are caged and bred as often as possible, and give birth to puppies who could have costly medical problems you might not become aware of until after you bring your new pet home.

2. Make Adoption Your First Option
If you’re looking to make a puppy part of your family, check your local shelters first. Not only will you be saving a life, but you will ensure that your money is not going to support a puppy mill. There are many dogs waiting for homes in shelters all across the country—and an estimated one in four is a purebred! Your second option is breed rescue. If your heart is set on a specific breed you haven’t been able to find in a shelter, you can do an Internet search for a breed-specific rescue organization.

3. Know How to Recognize a Responsible Breeder
If you’ve exhausted your options for adopting and are choosing to buy from a breeder, remember that responsible breeders have their dogs’ interests in mind. They are not simply interested in making a sale, but in placing their pups in good homes. A responsible breeder should screen you as thoroughly as you screen them! Read the ASPCA’s responsible breeding statement to find out more about how a responsible breeder behaves.

4. See Where Your Puppy Was Born and Bred
One sign that you are speaking to an unscrupulous breeder is that they will not let you see the facility in which your puppy was born. Always ask to see the breeding premises and to meet both parents (or at least the mother) of the puppy you want to take home. You should also ask for an adoption contract that explains—in terms you understand—the breeder’s responsibilities, health guarantee and return policy.

5. Internet Buyers, Beware!
Buying a puppy from the Internet is as risky as buying from a pet store. If you buy a puppy based on a picture and a phone call, you have no way of seeing the puppy’s breeding premises or meeting his parents. And those who sell animals on the Internet are not held to the Animal Welfare Act regulations, and so are not inspected by the USDA.

6. Share Your Puppy Mill Story with the ASPCA
If you have—or think you have—purchased a puppy-mill puppy, please tell us your story. Every bit of evidence gives us more power to get legislation passed that will ban puppy mills.

7. Speak Out!
Inform your state and federal legislators that you are disturbed by the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills, and would like to see legislation passed that ensures that all animals bred to be pets are raised in healthy conditions. You can keep up-to-date about current legislation to ban puppy mills by joining the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade.

8. Tell Your Friends
If someone you know is planning on buying a puppy, please direct them to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org. Let them know that there are perfectly healthy dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted.

9. Think Globally
Have a webpage, a MySpace page or a blog? Use these powerful tools to inform people about puppy mill cruelty by adding a link to our puppy mill information at ASPCA.org.

10. Act Locally!
When people are looking to buy or adopt a pet, they will often ask the advice of their veterinarian, groomer or pet supply store. Download and print our flyers (pdf) and ask to leave them in the offices of your local practitioners.

LAND ROVER NATIONAL RALLY

July 28th - August 1, 2009
LEADVILLE, COLORADO

Registration Information
Registration Deadline for the Rally is June 28th, 2009
For entries recieved after June 28th, 2009 please include Late Registration Fee.

Registration Fees
1 Vehicle and Driver (Solihull Society Member) $85
1 Vehicle and Driver (Non-Solihull Society Member) $100
Passengers (11 years and over) $50
Children 4-10 $15
Children under 4 FREE
Late Registration Fee $30

If you don't have an email address or don't want to register online, you can download and print the registration form and mail it, along with a check made out to "Solihull Society" for the registration fee, to:

Solihull Society
ATTN: Rally Registration
PO Box 480864
Denver, CO 80248-0864

For more information, contact registration@solihullsociety.org

Tuesday July 28th:
4:00- 8:00 PM Registration

Wednesday July 29th:
7:00-8:00 AM Registration, Trails, Training Class

Thursday July 30th:
7:00-8:00 Trails, Cocktail Party

Friday July 31st:
7:00-8:00 OPEN DAY - NO TRAILS

Friday July 31st:
Afternoon CAR SHOW, 4:00-8:00 P.M. An industry trade publication estimates the value of inventory at United States dealers which can no longer be sold probably exceeds $100 million; and

Beyond the current inventory, there are millions and millions of dollars worth of parts now in the product pipeline to dealers that cannot be sold; and

The industry estimates the retail market value for all off-road cycles and ATVs at $14.5 billion a year, including sales, service, parts, accessories, and payroll; and

Consumers have borrowed significant amounts of money on untold hundreds of thousands of youth ATVs and motorcycles; and

Parts for these youth ATVs and motorcycles are now unavailable, which in many cases renders the ATV or motocycle inoperable or not safely operable; and

If parts are not readily available, owners and operators may be tempted or forced to go beyond normal maintenance and repair guidelines, resulting in an improperly performing machine; and

The Consumer Product Safety Commission needs to take a common sense approach to implementation of the CPSIA's lead provisions in order to avoid major disruptions to youth ATV and motorcycle enthusiasts, owners, manufacturers, and the dealer network of thousands of small, independent businesses which employ tens of thousands of Americans; and

While protecting children from those products that truly present a lead risk is important, there should be a waiver or exclusion for products that do not present risk to children; and

While the CPSIA provides for exclusions and authorizes the Consumer Product Safety Commission to grant exclusions under certain conditions, to date the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not granted any exclusions for youth ATVs and motorcycles; and

Any delay in providing a waiver or exclusion for youth ATVs and motorcycles creates an untenable situation for thousands of owners, manufacturers, and dealers, many of whom are small businesses. Huge inventories of products that present no health risk to children are rendered retroactively illegal, and future products are prohibited from sale; and

A waiver or exclusion for youth ATVs and motorcycles is needed because, in the absence of government action, there likely will not be any new youth ATVs or motorcycles available for purchase in their local dealerships and owners will not be able to obtain parts for youth ATVs and motorcycles already purchased:

Nevada Trophy 2009 - April 17-19th

NVTR 2009 UP-DATE, WHAT IS NEVADA TROPHY?

Scheduled for April 17th-19th, 2009 in Nevada.

NVTR 2009 is a Navigational Adventure and promises to be more exciting than ever! Whether you're a past participant, a fellow enthusiast, or geocacher, NVTR has something for you.

NVTR was born in 1995, and after a season of work, the first event was run in December of 1996 in Fernley, Nevada. That year seven teams, of two cars each, participated in this special event, an event that combines GPS Navigation, the searching for Waypoints and off-road driving. NVTR is a combination of Camel Trophy, the Warn Challenge, and Geocaching, which we pre-date by some years. Everyone is welcome!

The object? Each participant is given XX hours, normally 12 to 15 per day, to search for and collect Waypoints over a given area. Route books are distributed to each car, in it you’ll find as many as 100 waypoints, five to a page. Each waypoint is shown in Longitude and Latitude form. Each waypoint has a particular points value from 100 to 1000, the higher the points value the more difficult it could be to find, or get there.

The twist? There isn’t enough time to collect all of the waypoints in the book. Scoring is simple, the team with the most points at the end of the event wins! But it is not a simple as that, as Mandatory Waypoints and Special Tasks can either add points, or take them away, as being late carries a 200-points per minute penalty, hence time management is key. Waypoints can be almost anywhere; a road sign, a Nevada Historic Marker, in a tree or bush, a geocache, or even a stick in the ground. For 2006, some of the great driving and navigational tasks of years gone-by will be back… should be great fun!

Once again this years event promises to be full of fun and adventure!

Teams: Each vehicle will have a Driver & Navigator. Every two cars will make a “team”; this is done for the safety of all participants… due to the vast terrain and weather that could be encountered. Each team must have a 4WD vehicle… more stock vehicles have won NVTR than not, so NO, you don’t need a modified vehicle to participate.

Required Items: Here are a few of the required items needed to participate; GPS (we suggest two), Compass, Nevada Atlas by DeLorme, Laptop (permitted, not required), pen/pencil, note pads, flashlights, work gloves, winter clothing, suitable boots, first-aid kit, fire extinguisher, shovel, snow chains, reflective tri-angles x2, recovery gear, and on-board food & drinks. All items must be secured inside the vehicle. We suggest they be strapped, attached or bolted down. See rules for details on Items Required and Tech Inspection.

Time Frame: NVTR2009: Friday start time is scheduled for 8:00am, then it’s two days of adventure, waypoints, and maybe a Special Task! This year’s event will be based at Nevada (exact hotel location TBA), the exact competition location being kept secret until the day of the event. At preset we are working with the State of Nevada on bringing you the best ever Nevada Trophy! Don’t delay on entering, sign up today for this unforgettable event.Welcome Meeting, to include Registration & Tech Inspection, April 16, 2:00pm to midnight.

Scoring: Scoring is via points earned vs. points lost. The team with the highest overall scored will be deemed the overall winner of NVTR2009.Everyone is welcome… First-timers seeking fun and adventure.

The Awards Breakfast will take place Sunday @ approx 9:00am.

Summary: Starting order for NVTR2009 is determined by your Paid Entry postmark.ENTRIES ARE NOW OPEN – get your entry in today!Pre-Entry fee is $300 per car. The trail has a nice water crossing with possible snow driving opportunities, depending on the storms.

Route:
After completing 2n17x we will reconnect with Pilot Rock trail to Hwy 173 and proceed north for 1.2 miles to the start of the Willow Creek Trail (3n34x). We will stop for lunch, and then proceed to the end at Hook Creek road. Total Trip time approximately 5.5 hours.

Meeting location:
Map Intersection of Hwy 173 and Pilot Rock Truck Trail 9:30 A.M., 03/14/09 GPS Coordinates: N 34.307853 W 117.309694

Directions:
From Interstate 15 head east on CA- 138 (8.2miles), turn left at CA- 173 and follow for approximately 2.3 miles, Pilot Rock Truck Trail on right.

Vehicle Requirements:
This trip is open to all Land Rovers; however stock rovers with running boards and air dams should take precaution and consider that scraping and or damage is likely. The 2n17x is laden with steep rocky hill climbs, narrow and off-camber trail sections.

What to bring:
Full tank of gas ( Chevron station at Interstate 15 and CA- 138 off ramp)
FRS radio Ch 7
Water
Lunch and snacks
Clothes (bring layers- quick change in temperature normal)
Camera

Resilient Technologies and Cooper Tire announce JDA!

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company’s latest endeavor to develop custom, innovative tire solutions has resulted in a joint development agreement with Resilient Technologies, LLC to produce a new, state-of-the-art, non-pneumatic (airless) military tire prototype.

The non-pneumatic tire (NPT) has been under development at Resilient for more than two years because of the growing number of military vehicles and personnel being stranded in Iraq, and elsewhere, due to flat tires caused by gunfire or shrapnel. Cooper Tire brings design, manufacturing, testing and performance expertise to this project. These attributes, coupled with Resilient Technologies’ experience with unique, engineered, advanced polymer products, pave the way for a revolutionary new product for the military. The NPT provides better mobility, range, functionality and reliability and requires less maintenance than a standard military HMMWV (Humvee) run-flat tire.

"We value the opportunity to work with Resilient Technologies on a project that directly helps save the lives of U.S. military personnel," said Chuck Yurkovich, Vice President of Global Technology for Cooper Tire. "The initial field tests, at speeds up to 55 mph, have reinforced that we’re on the right path regarding the tire’s structure and composition."

The airless tire abandons the traditional tire and rim design for a structure comprised of a unique rim, honeycomb and tread package, thereby eliminating the need for the cavity that typically retains air for a traditional tire. The honeycomb design allows bullets and shrapnel to move through the tire without disabling it. In fact, the NPT will continue to run even if a substantial portion of the honeycomb cells have been disabled.

"Cooper Tire’s expertise in tire manufacturing, testing and innovation uniquely complement Resilient’s expertise in polymer-based engineering," said Edward Hall, Vice President of Business Affairs and General Counsel for Resilient Technologies. "We are pleased to work with Cooper Tire in our efforts to safeguard those who protect our freedoms."

In its current design, the NPT is lighter than a traditional Humvee run-flat tire; does not require as much oil to manufacture; and is fully retreadable. After additional testing, Cooper Tire and Resilient Technologies will deliver prototypes to the U.S. Army, which will be manufactured for use on military Humvees.

Under the agreement, Cooper Tire and Resilient Technologies will introduce the NPT technology to commercial markets. "The strategy is to investigate how pieces of this technology could apply to advances on other vehicle platforms," added Yurkovich. "There are a lot of potential consumer benefits with a non-pneumatic tire and we’re looking forward to assessing the practicality of implementation in our markets."

14th Annual Truckhaven Challenge!!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270819106997512322" style="DISPLAY: block; The unit is completely bolt in. This provides for the fastest and easiest way to adjust your pinion angle.

Pinion angle is one of the more important measurements on a lifted vehicle. The wrong angle can lead to drive line vibration and premature failure of U-joints, drive shafts, pinion bearings and even transfer case output bearings.

What happens when the pinion angle is off?

As mentioned above, improperly set pinion angle causes vibration that can lead to early parts failure. The vibration results from unequal velocities at the opposite ends of the drive shaft. When a U-joint is run at an angle the drive shaft will actually speed up and slow down twice during each revolution, due to the changing angular velocity of the U-joint ends. The U-joint caps connected to the pinion yoke spin around the pinion without moving forwards or backwards, when viewed from the side.

The U-joint caps on the drive shaft move forwards and back quite a bit when viewed from the side, causing a change in the speed that the drive shaft rotates.

There will be no vibration if the angles are the same at both ends of the drive shaft because both ends will speed up and slow down at the same time and in the same amounts. If the angles are off the U-joints will still cause the speed to change at the same time (unless the drive shaft is twisted) but in different amounts, causing vibration. Keeping the pinion parallel with the output of the transfer case will keep the angles the same, avoiding vibrations. I don’t know anything about the harder trails, but I will share what I know to help those who will be attending their first Rally or their first trip to Moab. If you have specific questions, post them to this thread and between myself and others in this club, we should be able to come up with some answers.

How does the Rally work?

In the past, you visit the staging area and check in, where you receive a goodie bag and t-shirt, and there are maps posted of all the trail runs and so forth. The staging area is at the Old Spanish Trail Arena, just outside of town to the south, on the east side of the road. There are typically a lot of Solihul Society trail leaders hanging around (distinctively dressed) that you can ask for trail opinions & recommendations based on your rig. This is a good chance to meet others as well, and solicit their opinions regarding trails.

You do not “sign up” for a trail. You line up behind the trail leader, who are organized in a long line by the trail name they are leading. The first morning of the Rally you really want to get to the staging area early, around 7am. This is to line up in the trail you want to go on. If you are unsure, it’s another opportunity to get opinions about the trails before you line up and commit. Many of the trail groups depart the staging area around 7:30, so you have to be early. Don’t forget the time difference between SoCal time and Moab time. It will feel really early.

There is a mixer/cocktail party scheduled for Thursday night. this is a lot of fun. You get a few free drinks with your entry, and just about everybody is going to be there. Highly recommended. Wear your club t-shirt so folks know who you are!

The Friday night vendor show is worth attending. All the sponsors bring their toys for display. There is usually a few activities, like watching built up Rovers drive over a beat up old Jeep or something similar. There is an RTI ramp contest, and you can check out your flex. There is an outdoor BBQ put on by the trail leaders, and it's generally a good burger/hot dog, and the beer is cold and there are lots of people from all over the country to talk to. It's a good time.

The Saturday night banquet is usually at the Moab Valley Inn, and it's a long line for average food, but a great raffle. The raffle has TONS of stuff, a lot of it pretty darn good stuff, but it takes hours to give it all way. There are typically awards for events that occur during the Rally (like best rollover, etc...). If you are still in town, go. If not, you didn't miss much other than a good raffle.

About Moab:

There are Land Rovers everywhere during the Rally. It’s pretty cool. The Townspeople really seem to enjoy it and are very welcoming. I get my lunch materials, drinks, etc…at the City Market grocery store right downtown. It’s also where I get my gas, which seems to be a bit cheaper there than elsewhere. There is not a lot of things in Moab, it’s a very small town that literally closes in the winter. There are plenty of ATM’s, and there is a BofA. There is a McDonalds, but not a lot else. Everyone walks around the down town area at night. It’s quite lively and a lot of fun. Plenty of bars and restaurants. Moab Brewery is popular, but I could never figure out why, it offers mediocre food and closes early. If you have deep pockets, the only “fine dining” that I’m aware of is outside of town at Sorrel River Ranch, which is 5 star and first rate, and at least $800/night to stay there! There is a decent restaurant up hill on the cliff called Sunset Café or Grill or something like that. It’s not bad, but you might be better off hanging out at a local steakhouse/bar with all the lively atmosphere.

There is a iconic t-shirt shop right downtown that sells “dirty t-shirts” that have been stained Moab Red literally in the dirt. Lots of cool t-shirts for off roaders in there. There are a TON of outdoor gear shops, but they are all really pricey, however, selection of quality items tends to be better than what you will find at REI, and they are very much PRO off roading and biking/hiking/climbing, so it’s way better than REI in that regards.

Where does everybody hang out? Just look at any parking lot. There’s bound to be a bunch of Rovers there, many of them being worked on late into the evening :-)

Trail Run Etiquette. All your normal stuff that SCLR practices. TreadLightly, stay ON the trail, keep your spacing, don’t slow down the pack. More here.

Trail Requirements & Communications: Solihul Society requires a fire extinguisher and a CB radio. Many SCLR runs are all FRS, but you will want a CB radio for the National Rally. Plan ahead, install it and test it before you get there. There is a Radio Shack in town if you need a last minute item. You also NEED a full size matching spare tire.

Airing down: Most people air down at the beginning of the first trail, and just stay aired down all week long, on the trail and around town.

What can I expect to happen to my vehicle? Moab HATES bumpers. Expect to trash your rear bumper, and expect to rub a lot of fresh love on the front bumper too. Tires are almost irrelevant. The bigger the better of course, but street slicks will work nearly as good as the newest KM2’s. Slickrock sandstone offers phenomenal, gravity defying grip. Between the slickrock sections, you will encounter broken shale, or deep sand. Don’t even think about showing up with running boards on. Moab offers STEEP approach and departure angles, with SHARP breakover angles on sheer ledges. These ledges and steep angles are what will wreak havoc on your bumpers, but its so much fun, you really won’t care. Some trails are very rocky, such as Top of the World, which is not difficult, but offers a few ledges and some good larger than basketball sized rocks to scrape over. The traction is there, but you will rub things, I guarantee it. Having good underbody protection and steel bumpers is recommended. What to do outside of the Rally?I highly recommend the Tower Arch trail at Arches national park. There are also trails to the south such as Elephant Hill, and an overlook that looks over the confluence of the three major rivers that have created all those magnificent canyons. This is the south end of Canyonlands National Park.

Another activity that is very popular is floating down the Colorado river in a kyak or rubber hulled boat. There are organized trips nearly every hour it seems like. There is also an interesting night show. It’s a flat bottomed barge that floats down the river, and they have set up colored lights down the canyons and you are told about the history of the region and the cliffs really come to life. That’s pretty cool.

The mountain biking is world class. They have an entire off road park just for mtn biking, but all the vehicle trails are open to bikes also, and you will see mtn bikers all over the place. They are in amazing shape!

Dinosaur hunting. There are several places where you can view dinosaur foot prints in the sand stone. The trail to Klondike Bluffs has quite a few. There are others. Not too many cliff paintings in the immediate Moab area, but two hours south there are TONS of fascinating Anasazi ruins aplenty. Hotel Rock is one of the more famous ones.

Getting ThereThe Drive to Moab is beautiful. Starting with the amazing Virgin River gorge you ascend just east of Las Vegas towards St. George, then the spectacularly beautiful Fish Lake National Forest, then the stark and powerful Storybook Cliffs as you drop down in the Fremont junction/ Green River area. The final push to Moab is rather dry and flat, but as soon as you cross the Colorado, it’s spectacular again, and you are there! If you are driving straight through from SoCal, budget about 11 hours to get there. Many people opt to stay overnight in Cedar City. It’s another 5 hours or so to Moab once you hit Cedar City. If you are stopping in St. George instead, there are tons of major chain restaurants on the south side of the freeway. There is also a neat dinosaur museum on the northeast side of town that the kids might enjoy. It’s called “Dinosaur Discovery at Johnson Farm”.

On the way to Moab, you can stop by Zion and/or Bryce national park. Zion is a little bit like grand Canyon, except that you are on the bottom of the canyon, and can wade up the Narrows literally walking in the Virgin River as far as you want to go. There are lots of great, short, but strenuous hikes in Zion. Bryce is not a very “active” park, but it is beautiful, and Ruby’s Inn (at the entrance to the park) has some of the best “home style” cooking on the planet. Seriously good food.

One of the prettiest drives in the world is on the 12 highway. This will add a full day or more to your arrival in Moab, but it is so amazingly worth it. If you can add another day, exploring the slot canyons and Hole in the Rock trail in Escalante is epic. Best to be in good shape for this. I am 6’-7” and 300 lbs and it worked me good.

Okay, moment of truth: MOAB TRAIL RECOMMENDATIONSI drive an LR3, and wheel with Classics and DII’s regularly. I am an able spotter, and know the abilities of these rigs very well. I feel comfortable making recommendations on Disco II’s, LR3’s and RRC’s. D90’s very widely in ability, primarily in tire size and locker config.

Solihull changed their trail rating system this year, and have posted descriptions of what ratings 1 – 10 mean here.

These ratings are notably inaccurate for Modern Rovers (LR3/RRS/MkIII RR). I have found the trail rating system to be very difficult to use to judge actual trail difficulty. One of the best trails in Moab is the iconic Fins N Things. This trail is not very difficult, but it is 4. Hells Revenge is very similar, but slightly steeper, and has a few more entertaining, but optional obstacles, and gets a 6. If you liked Fins and Things, you will love Hells Revenge. Don’t sweat the 6 rating. However, Steelbender by all accounts, lives up to it’s name and is a very difficult 6, so traveler beware.

There are 31 trails this year, (there are far more in the area that are possible), I have driven on only 5 of them, and some of them only part way. I have heard about many of them, and have read the Charles Wells books so have some additional familiarity with them. I’ll provide a brief opinion where possible:

3-D "3” – No knowledge
Behind the Rocks "7" – No knowledge
Black Flag "9" – No knowledge
Chicken Corners "2" – No knowledge
Cliffhanger "6" – Not for those with fear of heights. Very tippy and off camber, very mentally difficult. A couple of big ledges. Not recommend for Modern Rovers
Copper Ridge "3” – No knowledge
Dome Plateau "4" – No knowledge
Fins 'n Things "4" – One of the best runs in Moab if you’ve never done it. HIGHLY recommended for every build of truck, from stock to locked.
Flat Iron Mesa "5" – I head it’s a good trail, it’s on my list of things to try this year
Gold Bar Rim "5" – No knowledge
Golden Spike "7" – iconic Moab trail. Doable in any lifted rover, but you will trash your bumpers. This is the trail with the big crack in the rock that you cross at an angle. It’s been photo’d a zillon times.
Greenday "6" – No knowledge
Helldorado "10" – No knowledge
Hell's Revenge "6” – One of the best runs in Moab if you’ve never done it. HIGHLY recommended for every build of truck, from stock to locked. A bit more mentally challenging than Fins, but not any more technically difficult. A very fun trail. One of the more famous runs.
Hellroaring Rim "3” – No knowledge
Hey Joe Canyon "3"– No knowledge
Kane Creek Canyon "6" – Numerous challenging river crossings (not deep, but steep wet banks as you climb out). Some years heavy brush growth will trash you paint, ask about current conditions. Fun trail if not too overgrown.
Metal Masher "6" – No knowledge
Minor Threat "10" – No knowledge
Moab Rim "7" – this is a very long trail, and is supposed to be amazing. Not sure about the difficulty level or what it means.
Poison Spider Mesa "5" – Another iconic run, has some interesting bits, but almost all slick rock and lots of fun. Can be done in a well driven Modern Rover
Porcupine Rim "5" – No knowledge
Pritchett Canyon "8" – Widely known around the world as one of the more difficult runs. Pretty much destined to roll over at least once on this trail. Jeep guys love it. Short wheel required.
Rose Garden Hill "5" – No knowledge
Secret Spire "2” – No knowledge
Seven Mile Rim "4" – well known for scenic beauty. I’ve never done it, but it’s on my To Do list this year.
Steelbender "6" – from what I’ve heard, it lives up to it’s name. lots of ledges.
Strike Ravine "5" – No knowledge
Tiptoe Behind the Rocks "5" – No first hand knowledge. Sounds interesting, I might try this one this year. From what I’ve read, a bit more expedition like trail instead of rock hound trail.
Top of the World "4” – Okay for any Modern Rover, or any 2” lifted Disco/Classic. Physically punishing trail. Very rocky, jarring trail, with not much to look at until you get to the top, then WOW, it really is the top of the world. The view is AMAZING, but the ride back is equally grueling. Plan on a long day. Trail head is an hour or more outside of town.
Wipe-Out Hill "5" – Trail is doable in an LR3, even the one alternate downhill obstacle, but most will chicken out, even the built up rigs.

For my photos of some of these trails, please check out these two links:- http://blog.nextstepdesigns.com/?cat=22- http://nwoods.smugmug.com/gallery/3315994_zfcfx#191480632_7Wpu4

Thanks to N. I was admiring stories and jokes and debates from all of you and I sat back and wondered "wouldn't it be awesome to actually meet all of these people who continue to shape what it means to be a land rover enthusiast?"

That's what my documentary "In Search of the Experience" is all about. I'm quitting my job and hitting the road to make the ULTIMATE portrait of the American Land Rover family. We'll be hitting some of the most awesome places this country has to offer in an epic 8000 mile on and off road adventure to find some of our most celebrated friends. Not only that, the documentary will also have a special features section demonstrating some of our most pressing "how-to" questions hosted by the cast! Additionally, we are teaming up with LRNA's mission to help replenish the Red Cross' Disaster Relief fund,- a large percentage of the proceeds from the sale of this thing will go straight to them!

YOUR CAST IS:

PT Schram – "Wrenchin to Riches!"
Chris Schaeffer – Encyclopedia Landrovica
Gerry Barrigan – Master Tech, RRC Trophy Truck Racer
John Gadd – RRC restoration and parts specialist
Garrett Porterfield – Team Rover Adventures
Will Tillery – One of the most trusted names in all Rover parts
Randy Banis – A Rover enthusiast and environmental champion
Disco Jen – Yes, there are women among us!
Marty Powell – Giver of Last Rights to Fallen Rovers
Jennifer Pickar – Disaster Relief Coordinator for Cedar Rapids, Iowa
MOAB, UT – that says it all. . .

Please Visit http://www.insearchoftheexperience.com/ for more details!

We shove off August 30th – September 21st you can find out how to link up with us on the web!

See you out there - elias

PISMO BEACH: AUG 22nd - 24th, 2008

Oceano Dunes SVRA (Pismo Beach)
August 22-24, 2008

When: August 22nd through 24th

Where: Oceano Dunes SVRA – Pismo Beach, California

What: Sand Dunes, camping, games, food, driving
challenges, technical lessons

Oceano Dunes is the only place in California where it is legal to drive on the beach. Approx. 1500 acres of sand dunes for you to explore and nearly 5 miles of beach front camping.
http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1207

Typically we like to camp out in the dunes away from all the raucous. There is no curfew in Oceano Dunes so it is not uncommon to hear motorcycles, quads, sand rails, buggies, trucks, and yes, even Rovers at ALL hours of the night. For this reason we like to choose a secluded area to help minimize these intrusions and create somewhat of a safety buffer for families and children and pets. Camp site will be determined at a later date closer to the event. Usually we camp at a marked area that has bathrooms and fire pits etc. Camping must be reserved ahead of time! This is important. I don’t expect the dunes to get full since it is not a holiday weekend but either way, it is a possibility so reservations should be made ASAP!!!! Please go to the Reserve America website at http://www.reserveamerica.com/ to enter dates. Camping is $10.00 per night and a $7.50 reservation fee. You will also need to register for an account with Reserve America to do so.

Itinerary:

Friday August 22nd
8am - ? Camp arrivals all day long.
All day People unable to find camp may need escorts etc.
Upon arrival Camp set-up. Exploratory drives
12pm - 1pm Lunch
6pm - 8pm Optional Dinner at Old Juan’s Cantina (RSVP required)
9pm - ? Campfire

Sunday August 24th
All day Dune exploring and practicing.
Leave for home at any time

Directions to Oceano SVRA entrance:
From North or South Interstate 101 south past Pismo to Arroyo Grande. Grand Avenue exit turn right (west) approx. 2 miles Pacific Coast highway intersection (light) turn left (south) approx. 1 mile Pier Avenue intersection (light) turn right (west) approx. ½ mile Stop at guard shack entrance. (see attached map)

At this point you have two options upon entering the dunes.

Option 1
AIR DOWN!!! Yes let the air out of your tires down to 15psi (will look flat). Just do it, you don’t want to be the guy stuck in the sand just to have a road ar, Jeep, H2 stop and say “Air down to 15psi”. Once aired down, head south along beach until the dunes begin turning it any opening. The speed limit here is 15mph, please adhere to it. There are riders, people walking, etc. all along the beach. Once away from “highways” you may increase speed. Please be cautious however if this is your first time in the dunes as there are “whoop-dee-doo’s” and sudden drop offs. You will need to use GPS coordinates below to find the camp. If you get lost, call one of us and we will find you based on your coordinates at that time. DO NOT move after giving us your location. (see attached map)

Option 2
AIR DOWN!!! Yes let the air out of your tires down to 15psi (will look flat). Just do it, you don’t want to be the guy stuck in the sand just to have a road car, Jeep or H2 stop and say “Air down to 15psi”. Once aired down, call one of us and we will come get you and you can follow us back to camp. Please air down before we get there so we don’t have to sit and wait. DO NOT move after giving us your location.

Camping Accommodations
Predominately Tents and/or tent trailers inland on the dunes at either Cottonwood or Eucalyptus Tree Campgrounds. RV’s and larger camping trailers limited to hard pack sand along surf. Chemical or vault toilets are provided at various locations throughout the dunes. You must bring your own water (water is sold at $1.00/gallon on the beach but its hard to find them).

Optional accommodations can be found many motels available nearby along Pismo and Shell Beaches along with Grocery stores and liquor stores etc.

Reporting Emergencies
Dial 911 on cell phone, California Highway Patrol. Cleghorn is the name of the exit that is just before the 138 Hwy. If you pass a Chevron or McDonald's, you've gone too far. Top off your gas tank at the Chevron if you wish, but turn around and head back downhill on the 15 to the next exit, Cleghorn.

Meeting Place & Trip Itinerary
Cleghorn Exit off the 15 freeway. There is a small dirt staging area on the northeast side of the freeway. This is the trail head and our first meeting point, Saturday, July 19th at 7:00 pm. The Run will begin at 7:30- we'll drive a dirt road for a couple of miles-- we should get to the first real 4-wheeling challenge around 8:00 pm, just as the sun is setting. The moon rises at 9:00 pm. Then we'll begin driving the 4x4 trails and enjoy the evening off roading. We hope to be done by about Midnight.

Vehicle Requirements
Any stock Land Rover, old or new is welcome. We will be traveling on trails that will be appropriate for the entry level off road driver. More difficult routes are available and will be optional. The Cleghorn trail offers a wide range of fun, and always has a bypass should you ever have any doubts.

What To Expect
Bring with you an open mind and a sense of adventure. We will advise you along the way as to what you will experience on the various off shoots. You will be getting in and out very frequently, and walking/climbing often. You will exert yourself physically. Your truck will get very dusty, however your truck will unlikely suffer any damage.

Trail Description:
The Cleghorn trail is the ultimate training trail. The main trail is a wide, flat well-maintained dirt blvd. You will never need 4wd to drive the main trail. However, paralleling and frequently criss-crossing this trail is a much more fun 4x4 and ATV trail. This parallel trail (called an off shoot), ranges in difficulty from a 3 to an 8, (on a scale to 10). The beginning stages are fun with the trail gradually getting more difficult as you progress. We have explored this trail many times, and can advise you appropriately along the way. At the peak of the ridgeline, we will reach 5,300 feet above sea level and stop for a snack.

Trail Guide from "Backcounty Adventures" - click here (7.1mb pdf download)
Trail Guide from "SoCal Guide to Backroads" - click here (3.5mb pdf download)
Photos of previous SCLR trail runs on Cleghorn - click here or here.

Radio Communications
FRS radios are preferred. Go South on 86S for about 70 miles and it will turn in to Hwy 78/Main St. You will have gone through a town called Westmorland and Brawley. Brawley is the last town you will see, so top off your gas tanks there. Note: One thing to keep in mind, after driving through Brawley is to stay on the 78! There is one part of the road where it forks to the 115 and the 78, don’t go right on to the 115 it appears to be the more “natural” way of the road, but stay to the left (hard left) on the 78!

Google Map: http://tinyurl.com/2pkxty (from West Covina area) (at the intersection of Hwy 78 and Gecko Rd.) Once you get to Gecko Rd, go all the way down until the road (past another camp called “Gecko Camp”), until it finally ends in a loop at Roadrunner Campground. This is our camp area. Drive around the loop road and you will find Land Rovers (we will probably be the only Land Rovers out there). You can’t really get lost once you are on Gecko Rd, you just go straight until you run right in to Roadrunner camp.

Vehicle requirements:
Any Land Rover is suitable, from completely stock to fully “tricked out.” However, wider, taller tires will have a floatation advantage in the sand.

Difficulty level:
Medium. All you need is a pinch of courage, a dash of practice and dollop of gas, then you can tackle these dunes without a problem.

Complete list of rules and regs are here
http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/elcentro/recreation/ohvs/isdra/dunesinfo/lawenforcement/rules_regs.html

Campground Info:
• We will be camping at Roadrunner Campground
• The camp is a paved loop road, surrounded by sand. You can pitch your tent in the soft sand right off the pavement or park your trailer or RV right on the pavement. There are only chemical restrooms with no running water, so please bring all water you require with you!
• Permits Required: $25 per vehicle for one week camping permit
• Can purchase at the entrance of roadrunner camp or over the phone: (800) 278‐0165
• Or purchase online at http://www.imperialsanddunes.org/

FLAG REQUIREMENTS
All vehicles shall be equipped with a whip mast and a 6x12 inch red/orange flag. Flags may be of pennant, triangle, square, or rectangular shape. Masts must be securely mounted on the vehicle and extend 8 feet from the ground to the mast tip. Safety flags must be attached within 10 inches of the tip of the whip mast with club or other flags mounted below safety flag or on another whip. Where to purchase/how to mount: You can purchase flags from ATV/motorcycle shops (Berts, Cycle Parts West, Chaparral Motorsports, etc….) They may have various bumper mounts or clamp mounts you can bolt to your roof rack, etc. The EASIEST way to attach a flag is to get a receiver hitch flag mount. It is simply a piece of 2” box tubing with a hole for the pin and a hole for a flag to bolt on. I purchased mine at Sweet Maries (a huge vendor setup in the sand a few miles from our camp).

What to bring:
• Water, for ANYTHING you need water for. (No running water at camp)
• Warm clothes for night time
• Hats and sunscreen
• Flag for your truck, see below.
• Glow stick or whip light for the night run.
• Extra gas (10 gallons), nearest gas station from camp is about 45 minutes drive.
(Top off tanks in Brawley on your way in)
• Cameras! This place is very photogenic, everyone needs lots of pictures!
• GPS: These dunes are big and vast! Our area is relatively secluded and getting “off track” is possible, so a GPS unit will prove very handy here.
• Money. It costs $25 for the permit to enter the area (valid for up to one week) They do take credit cards, one trip I went and the credit card machine was down, so cash is a good thing to have.
• Heavy duty tow strap and shackles (big enough to pull a Rover out of the sand!)
• 12v Air compressor or air tank, will need to air up our tires at the end of the trip.
• Firewood! A nice roaring fire is nice on those chilly nights out there!

Trails to run:

Friday
12:00pm, onward: Arrivals begin and will last all day and I’m sure late in to the night. Make sure to set up camp nice and “sloppy” (spread wide) so that we can “tidy” up as others come. Rangers do not allow roping, taping, or coning off areas to save spots. They are very strict about this!
• Set up camp, random duning around the area.
• Short Aqueduct run TBA at camp before dark

Saturday
10:00 am – Gather around for general “Dune Running 101” Q&A to discuss razor backs,
carrying momentum, keeping distance from other vehicles going up, in case they get stuck
or need to back down a hill, airing down, etc.
11:00 am ‐ Destination Boardmanville, via wash 10 / lunch stop. Bring lunch or buy from
Boardmanville. This will be a long run, bring everything you need to survive for the afternoon. Depending on how long the run takes, go back to camp or head straight to sand drags.

Saturday (continued)
3:30pm – Sand drags. Watch the crazies and race your Rover if you dare!
5:30 pm – Dinner, on your own, anything goes!
8:30 pm – Night run to Oldsmobile hill. Whip light or glow stick required to tape on your flag. Divide groups in to 5 or less trucks with assigned leader and tail, we don’t want to lose anyone, do we?
Bonfire all night – There will be a designated bonfire area. Saturday, Jan. 12th, will be akin to the overland type of travel with less intense, longer, and very scenic trails. Sunday, Jan 13th, will consist of shorter, more aggressive trails. The most difficult trail of Sunday is also the first run for the day (Twin Rocks) and is a return trip, so those who wish to opt out of the 6/7 rated trail can simply wait and re-unite with the rest of the group at the trailhead. The selected trails should be possible (with the possible exception of the Twin Rocks Trail), but difficult, in a stock Rover (Freelanders may be excluded) equipped with good tires and a good driver and/or spotter. That said, however, I have not pre-run this trail. I can’t make any promises about trail conditions/likelihood of obtaining some “Sierra Pinstripes”/et al. The trail rating guidelines mean body damage should, ideally, not be an issue in a properly driven Rover – however, ultimately you will have to rely on your own judgment and skill on all trails. Those attending will be responsible for bringing their own food and water.

The campsite for Saturday night is around 1500 ft., but I believe our camp is located in a valley so it could get fairly cold. Please be prepared for the temps and please leave your dogs at home if you plan on leaving them to sleep outside. For those that do not want to “fight the Man”, an Adventure Pass is required by the local authorities. Lastly, please be prepared to listen to a very short Tread Lightly! Talk and to follow all treadightly!

Meeting location for
Saturday 01/13/08 at 10:00AM

From Los Angeles: Head North on I-5 to CA-166. Take CA-166 west to mile marker 52 (about 12.5 miles west of New Cuyama. GPS N35 02.07’ W119 52.56’). Turn Southwest onto Cottonwood Road (paved). Turn right onto Foothill Road and follow signs for Los Padres National Forest. Bear left at sign for Bates Canyon Road. Head down the now graded dirt road to the White Oaks Guard Station (now closed) where we
will meet up at 10:00 am and continue on at 10:30.

The trails are as follows:
Bates Canyon Trail (#38 in Backcountry Adventures – Southern California: 12 miles, 1 hour, 2 out of 10 in difficulty). Portions traveled to reach Guard Station. Bates Canyon terminates at Sierra Madre Road (#37: 30 miles, approximately 3 hours, 2 out of 10).

From Sierra Madre Road we will continue back across CA 166 to Big Rocks Trail (#39: 4.4 miles, 0.5 hour, 2 out of 10). Camp for Saturday evening will be at a facility just off of the trail.

Sunday 01/14/08
Sunday we will hit several shorter, but more challenging trails.
Twin Rocks Trail (#40: 5.6 miles, approximately 1.5 hours out and back, 6 out of 10 with a 7 rating for the last 0.7 mile). This trail provides a good place to turn around before the rating reaches its 7 rating. Or, if you prefer to forego this trail altogether, the trail ends where it begins providing us a good place to regroup. Branch Creek (#41: 7.3 miles, approx. 1.5 hours, 5 out of 10). Twin Rocks begins/ends very close to Branch Creek. In turn, we will exit the Branch Creek trail slightly early and turn onto Paradise Road. Paradise Road (#42: 3.4 miles + 1.1 mile spur, 1 hour, 3-4 out of 10). Paradise Road terminates back into Big Rocks Trail, which we will follow back out to CA 166 to end the day hopefully with some daylight left for the trip home.

Communication:
Both CB and FRS stations will be on Channel 4.0

Dec 9, 2007 - New Member Trail Orientation

Dates of Event
Sunday, Dec 9th, 2007One day only!Download PDF of this Trip Sheet (73kb PDF)

Introduction
SCLR has enjoyed a large influx of new members who have joined our club, particularly in this last quarter of the year.

This is the trail head and our first meeting point., Sunday December 9th at 10:00am.
The Orientation will begin with a presentation and discussion about the SCLR, our trips, outfitting your Land Rover, and driving tips. We'll adjourn the morning session for lunch. Following lunch, we'll begin driving the 4x4 trails and enjoy the afternoon off roading. We hope to be done by about 4:00 pm.

Vehicle Requirements
Any stock Land Rover, old or new is welcome. We will be traveling on trails that will be appropriate for the entry level off road driver. More difficult routes are available but will be optional. The Cleghorn trail offers a wide range of fun, and always has a bypass should you ever have any doubts. This is a laid back trip, with a focus on having fun and learning. There will be no pressure to exceed your comfort level.

What To Expect
Bring with you an open mind and a sense of adventure. You will learn what SCLR is all about and how to enjoy what the club and its current members have to offer. You will also learn what your vehicle is capable of and how to navigate various obstacles. The intent of this trip is to take it easy. We will advise you along the way as to what you will experience on the various off shoots. We will walk the more challenging trails on foot prior to having you drive them. You will be getting in and out very frequently, and walking/climbing often. You will exert yourself physically. There will be spotters guiding you at all times necessary. Your truck will get very dusty, however your truck is highly unlikely to suffer any damage.

Trail Description:
The Cleghorn trail is the ultimate training trail. The main trail is a wide flat well maintained dirt blvd. You will never need 4wd to drive the main trail. However, paralleling and frequently cris-crossing this trail is a much more fun 4x4 and ATV trail. This parallel trail (called an off shoot), ranges in difficulty from a 3 to an 8, (on a scale to 10). But true to it's nature, it starts out easy. The beginning stages are fun, but very easy. The trail gradually getting more difficult as you progress through the trail, while your experience and confidence grows. In most cases, you can see the entire off shoot and decide if you wish to attempt it or not. We have explored this trail many times, and can advise you appropriately along the way. At the peak of the ridgeline, we will reach 5,300 feet above sea level and have lunch.

This new global partnership with the world’s largest humanitarian organisation will ensure the adventure competition leaves a positive legacy by acting as a platform to generate funds and assist life-changing humanitarian projects around the world.
Land Rover Managing Director Phil Popham said: “The Land Rover G4 Challenge is an incredible programme that demonstrates our products’ breadth of capability and displays our desire to always push the boundaries of adventure. It is ideal to work as a fundraising and awareness building platform for a humanitarian organisation and we are delighted that we can now make the most of the Challenge’s success and leave a lasting positive legacy by working with the International Federation.
“Land Rover is a strong brand that has a natural fit with humanitarian organisations in general. Our association with the International Federation goes back a long way, to 1954, when Land Rover supplied a long-wheelbase Series 1 to the British Red Cross for use in Dubai as a mobile dispensary. We are now looking forward to forging closer links with the International Federation through the Land Rover G4 Challenge.”
Sir Nicholas Young, the CEO of the British Red Cross, speaking on behalf of the International Federation, said: “An association with the Land Rover G4 Challenge offers a unique and positive way for the International Federation to reach completely new audiences. It will enable us to activate projects that may otherwise not be possible. This will be a partnership that will save lives - it’s as simple as that.”
The ultimate global adventure bringing together 18 nations in mixed-gender teams
In a significant expansion to the previous events run in 2003 and 2006, the 2008/09 Land Rover G4 Challenge will involve mixed-gender national teams. Competitors from 18 different countries, who can now register their interest on www.landroverg4challenge.com, will battle through a rigorous national and international selection process. The best male and female from each nation will enter the Challenge itself, which will take place in Asia in early 2009.
The event will again have off-road driving at its core, combined with adventure sports and extreme initiative challenges for an ultimate test of team spirit and physical fitness. The entire Land Rover fleet will be involved, with the Range Rover Sport, Freelander 2 and Discovery 3 all in action as competition vehicles in the distinctive Tangiers Orange colour. The victorious national team will win a Land Rover for their National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society.
Martin Dreyer, winner of the 2006 Challenge, said: “The last Challenge was an amazing experience and it was a fantastic feeling to win after such a tough competition against competitors from all around the world. I am sure that the new format, with national teams and more female competitors, will make the next Challenge even more exciting.”
The Challenge will follow Land Rover’s brand-wide environmental programme and will be fully CO2 offset, supporting specifically identified global projects through Land Rover’s partner Climate Care. This programme, coupled with considerate competition design, will ensure the event has neutral environmental impact while leaving a positive humanitarian legacy with International Federation projects around the world.
For more information and high-resolution photographs, log on to the Land Rover G4 Challenge online media facility at www.media.landrover.com or contact: Will Gray wgray@prismteam.com +44 (0) 207 711 6885

source media.ford.com
